Meet the apprentice – Greig's Story

At Ferguson Marine, we are committed to investing in important skills through our apprenticeship programme, offering young talent the chance to gain hands-on experience and accelerate their career growth. Many of our apprentices are proud to be able to continue a family tradition of working in shipbuilding that spans generations.

Greig, a second-year fabricator apprentice, is the latest in his family to pursue a career in shipbuilding. His father, two brothers, and grandfather all worked in the industry, and it’s this family connection that has inspired Greig to follow in their footsteps.

Since joining our apprenticeship programme, Greig has gained valuable experience working on various projects, including shaping and bending metal for spigots using the Plough machine. One of the aspects he enjoys most about his work is tack welding, and his key lesson so far is that “experience means a lot”.

Greig’s story is just one example of how apprenticeships provide young people with the skills they need to succeed, while contributing to Scotland’s growing maritime sector. At Ferguson Marine, we’re proud to offer these opportunities and support the development of the next generation of shipbuilders.

Applications for our 2025 apprentice programme are now open. For more information on how to apply, please visit our Careers page.
