Eight new apprentices join Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) Ltd to begin careers in shipbuilding

Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) Ltd has welcomed eight new apprentices as part of its 2025 intake, continuing to support the next generation of shipbuilders in Scotland.

Six of the apprentices will attend West College Scotland Clydebank, with two attending West College Scotland Greenock campus. As well as gaining valuable on-the-job training through onsite work placements throughout, over the next two years the apprentices will work towards their SVQ2 in Performing Engineering Operations and complete their NC Fabrication and Welding units.

Frances Rice, Apprentice Coordinator at Ferguson Marine, said: “It’s brilliant to see the next cohort of apprentices beginning their careers with us. We received an impressive number of applicants for our 2025 programme, which show how important it is to create opportunities for young people. It’s a great start to build long-term careers while also play a key role in shaping the future of industries like shipbuilding. At Ferguson Marine, we support individuals at early stages of their careers and help them develop skills and experience they need to succeed.”

All eight apprentices are local to the area, strengthening Ferguson Marine’s focus on investing in and developing shipbuilding skills in Inverclyde.

One of the new apprentice welders, Adam Watt, added: “It’s a big step for me after school. I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in shipbuilding, and this feels like an exciting opportunity to learn more about profession and especially gain experience in a real workplace. It's great to work and study in my local area, and it’s been nice meeting the other apprentices and starting together.”
