Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) is recruiting its 2021 intake of apprentices as part of ongoing plans to grow and upskill the shipyard workforce.
The shipyard’s apprenticeship programme is a three-year course designed to help young people develop a future career in the shipbuilding industry. There are 15 apprentice vacancies covering technical, engineering, pipefitting and fabrication/welding roles.
Successful applicants will join the shipyard team at the end of August and will learn their trade through a combination of classroom-based learning at college and practical experience gained on-site at the shipyard in Port Glasgow, with dedicated supervision and mentoring from experienced shipyard employees.
The programme is part of Ferguson’s ‘Grow Our Own’ initiative to develop and promote skilled trades to meet future business requirements. In 2020, the shipyard recruited a record 25 new apprentices for fabrication, welding, mechanical engineering and technical support roles. A higher number was recruited last year to account for the absence of new apprentices in 2019.
Tim Hair, Turnaround Director at Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow), said:
“We restarted the apprenticeship programme last year because apprentices are a core part of our workforce. They are vital to the future of the shipyard and the programme is designed to ensure we sustain and strengthen the skills required for shipbuilding in Scotland.
“The apprenticeship programme is a great opportunity for young people who want to develop a rewarding career with plenty of opportunities for progression and personal growth. Those who join us will gain an academic understanding of the work and practical experience of a manufacturing and engineering environment, as well as other workplace skills – all while earning a salary. Many of our current employees started as apprentices and have enjoyed varied and successful careers.
“We are committed to skills development, supporting jobs in the local and surrounding areas and ongoing growth of the workforce as part of our aim to build a successful and competitive shipyard business.”
